Forget about chocolate, waffles and beer and set off on an alternative tour of Brussels where you will discover what makes the capital of Belgium truly unique.

Itinerary

This 2.5-walking tour starts from the Grand Place, in the heart of the city. Follow your knowledgeable English-speaking guide to The Marolles neighborhood, a traditional working-class district. This area is most famous for its Flea Market, which takes place every day in Place Jeu de Balle. This is the perfect place to visit if you like hunting for vintage items, from posters to silver rings to antiques. Your guide will explain how the neighbors of this area saved it from a large urbanization project in the late 1970s and how it is threatened again because of increasing house prices.

Another special aspect of Brussels is its passion for comic strips. As you walk along the city center, you will contemplate numerous murals dedicated to Franco-Belgian comic books. Not only will you admire Belgium’s most famous fictional hero: Tintin, but you will also walk past other unforgettable characters like Lucky Luke, Gaston, Marsupilami and Gil Jourdan.

This tour will also highlight the most famous street artists and their work on murals, walls, building façades and even on light posts. Brussels is a genuine open-air museum! Lately, many street artists have also painted murals to pay homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks.

Like in other capitals, Brussels accommodates a LGBT district, which is very close to the Grand Place. Find out about Saint Jacques neighborhood and the first bars, pubs and clubs to open in the area in the 1970s. Nowadays, locals and visitors will find this area to be one of the liveliest at nighttime.

What better than to go for a walk in a pedestrian area? Brussels is home to the second largest pedestrian area in Europe, after Venice. Your guide will lead you through some of the nearly 50 hectares in the city center.

Based in Brussels, the European Parliament brings together demonstrations from all of Europe and for all types of reasons, from farmers who protest against the rise of taxes to activists in favor of immigration, for example.
